Tree Pruning

Crown Reduction

Crown Reduction involves reducing the size of the tree’s overall canopy. This is achieved by pruning the branches evenly throughout the crown. During this process dangerous deadwood and crossing branches are removed or pruned to minimize the possibility of disease infecting the tree.

Crown Thinning

Crown Thinning involves the selective removal of inner branches throughout the crown of the tree. This allows light to penetrate through the crown and lessens wind resistance, without altering the tree’s natural shape. As with Crown Reduction, all dangerous dead wood and crossing branches are removed during this operation. This work can also be remedial for the long-term health of more mature trees.

Crown Lifting

Crown Lifting is the removal of selected branches and limbs from the lower part of the tree, so lifting the crown’s overall height. This process creates a feeling of space under the tree and will also allow light to penetrate through to the ground below.

Pollarding

Pollarding involves the removal of all branches and most limbs, which as a result, leaves only the trunk and occasionally a framework of the major limbs. This technique would either be used where the crown of a deciduous tree is simply too large for its location or in instances where extensive defects and weaknesses might make the tree unstable. Pollarding is normally first undertaken when a tree is quite young. After a tree has been pollarded the tree is then given some time to re grow, after which the process may be repeated. It is worth noting that severe pruning of this type can stimulate vigorous re growth.

Branch & Limb Removal

Sometimes it is necessary to remove certain branches, without fully reducing, thinning or lifting the crown. For example If a large branch or number of branches are affecting a neighbour’s garden, it may be required that they be removed. This process generally involves removing as little live growth as possible to ensure the health and stability of the tree.

Deadwood Pruning

As a tree grows it is natural for some branches to die back. Deadwooding is the removal of dead, dying or broken branches and diseased branch wood. It is advisable to have your tree regularly inspected and cleared of any deadwood not only to keep the tree healthy, but also to prevent accidents or injury from falling dead branches.

Tree Removal

Tree Removal

Occasionally a tree will need to be removed completely and this can be for a number of reasons. A diseased tree may have to be removed to ensure neighbouring trees do not also become infected.

Other reasons may include safety (to people and property) i.e if a tree is in a state of decay or in a weakened condition, or if the tree is in an unsuitable area affecting planning applications and construction projects. Felling a large tree in a restricted area will normally require the tree to be dismantled in sections using ropes. Where space allows, a tree may be felled in the traditional way, by bringing the tree to ground using practiced methods to ensure a safe, controlled and calculated fell.

Fallen Trees

In the case of fallen trees, safety would be the primary consideration and we would always try and treat these cases as a priority. A tree falls down usually due to age or ill health or as a result of exceptionally high winds. Normally it is a combination of all three.

Removal of Dead & Dangerous Trees

The removal of dead and dangerous trees in confined spaces and over obstructions and buildings is an exacting and specialised task and our staff are fully trained to carry out the high climbing and lowering procedures involved.

Stump Grinding & Root Removal

Once a tree has been felled to ground level, you may also require the stump to be removed. This procedure involves using a stump grinding machine which will grind the stump out of the ground until both the stump and the root system are destroyed. This would be required if replanting is intended in the area where the tree once stood, or if the stump is causing an obstruction. Stumps can be treated to ensure that regrowth does not occur.

Hedging

Hedge Trimming

Hedge Trimming ensures the hedge remains neat, tidy and an attractive feature of your garden. Regular trimming trains the hedge to look tight and full and can avoid the need to cut back heavily. If neglected, cutting back heavily can result in a bare and unpleasant looking hedgeline which may take some time to fully recover. Hedge trimming may also include the reduction in hedge height if required.

High Hedges

Under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, local authorities can now intervene in disputes over high hedges. They will decide if the hedge height is stopping someone’s reasonable enjoyment of their home or garden and will be able to serve a remedial notice to the hedge owner to identify exactly what action must be taken. Complainants could also face fines of up £1000 if they fail to comply with the notice.
